And among the crooked police more determined to control riots than crime, a lone wolf, detective Gereon Rath, remains determined to solve the murder of a man whose mutilated body is dragged from a canal, and a larger mystery.

This was made into a series on Netflix, which I saw before I read the book. I bought this book because of how much I enjoyed the Bernie Gunther books by the late Philip Kerr, which partly cover the same era.

It is far from the series, the show creators changed the story line a lot. I liked is as it would be very boring to re read the things I've already saw.

For me the show is actually better than a book but the book is good enough to read while you are waiting for them to film the second series I had watched the Netflix series but the work on which it is based is really very good.

Creates the atmosphere of Weimar Germany. Worth the read. Not sure in which order you should do it. I had no choice as I had already seen the series.

Sehr gut verpackt. The above book was a graphic novel, which I gave to somebody who reads such books.

I still prefer printed works, but apparently many books nowadays love graphic novels and I was told that it was very well done.

So so. Great plot in a wonderful era. Usually I prefer the book to the film or TV show. This book is good, but the TV is great.

The TV show hurtles out of the blocks and never slows down. The book plods a bit. I gather the TV show folded elements of the second book into the first.

There was just a lot more going on in that. He hopes to get on homicide. A lot of the elements wind up differently, though.

And things between him and Charlotte get started much faster. Still, I look forward to the second book. Understanding pre-Nazi Germany helps you understand what came later.

And there's a special dimension to reading works in translation. What it loses in clarity it makes up for in authenticity. This is 5 stars by the standard of crime novels, it's not literature.

I watched the Netflix series first. The novel is very different in terms of plot and characters, but both are excellent.

The German TV series is visually stunning, the novel is tighter and more plausible. Both can be enjoyed without knowing the history of the Wiemar Republic, though such knowledge adds another dimension.

I thought both made good decisions in what to leave out, with just enough politics to convey the chaos and fanaticism of the period, but not enough to overwhelm the story.

The TV series two seasons - 16 episodes just covers this first book, though it leaves open the possibility of a sequel, and it focuses more on the depravity and poverty of the era.

I do not know how a publisher wages a smear campaign without publishing which should have been read in police stations across Germany but maybe it can be done.

No one in Berlin learns squat about him. He is the mysterious man from Cologne. He annoys people, causes more trouble within the police than he is worth and no one picks up a phone to find out where the jerk came from.

It is clear that he is protected by the big Berlin boss but apparently Cologne is so far away that no one calls anyone there,no one happens to travel thru and drop in on the Cologne CID office and ask "why has Gereon Rath moved to Berlin?

Give me a break, they are Prussians; they read organization charts for light reading when Hertha is on a losing streak.

Sad to know that this series is behind a top TV production. Hopefully it has been massively rewritten. The differences between the book and the television series are numerous - some are minor plot points, some are narrative short-cuts in the tv production, and there are a few changes in the actions of characters - enough to suggest that if you've seen and enjoyed the program, there's enough differences to also enjoy the book.

Kutscher's Weimar Berlin is much more gritty than Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther mysteries Berlin Noir: Penguin eBook Bernie Gunther Mystery 1 , although the political nuance and struggles with Kutscher play a much more subtle role - and the "Golden Twenties" of Berlin are highlighted much more clearly.

The story for those unfamiliar with it concerns a cop, Gereon Rath, newly reassigned to Berlin's police after a scandal in his native Cologne.

Rath, seeking advancement and recognition, begins an independent investigation into a murder that quickly escalates into a web of intrigue: stolen Russian gold from a family fleeing the Soviets, the growing National Socialist movement, Berlin's criminal underground, and of course the on-gong political battles between the socialists and fascists.

The story is complex and fast-paced. A recommended read. I was super excited to read this book. The show was a big success here in Berlin, but until recently was only available in German.

While I like the book as a detective novel just fine, I think it suffers from rushed translation work. The prose is often stilted, and a little weird, in a way that I can only assume is driven by financial requirement to cash in on the show.

Maybe they'll redo it someday. An interesting story. I admit I read this book after watching the miniseries of the same name. If you watched the mini series, the book is somewhat different--less sex and drugs for one thing though these are present in the book also the characters are somewhat different Charlie for instance seems to have a smaller role in the book.

Obviously the book goes into more detail on the situation in Berlin at the time and we see the interplay of communists Trotsky and Stalin flavors the Nazis, organized crime gangs and the government politics.

I will say that the story lags at times as the author will often go into minutiae that does not seem unrelated to the story perhaps later books will come back to some of these.

The novel also has a very German feel both in word selection and sentence structure the author is German after all but at times I find myself thinking of Clausewitz or Kant and that is not really a good thing for a popular novel.

All in all I must say at times the novel seemed to bog down though I thought the story picked up near the end my wife read this and had the opposite opinion she thought the end dragged.

The story is different enough from the TV show that the show wont spoil the book or vice versa. I am unsure if I will read the second book in this story.

I read the kindle version and had no issues with that version. This is the first installment of a murder mystery series set in Weimar Berlin in , sandwiched between the end of the First War and the rise of the Nazis.

The series has proven to be a knockout in Germany, and increasingly is picking up steam here even though we have access to only the first two volumes.

The thing that is so appealing to me is that the author, who is from Cologne and was born in , is accurately able to reconstruct the Berlin of A recent New York Times article explained how the author buries himself in old newspapers and other material from the Weimar period, and this allows him to create an accurate picture of Berlin even though many of the buildings of this period were destroyed during World War II.

As his central character, a police inspector Gereon Rath by name, zips around the city, he traverses areas that come alive from 90 years ago.

I have visited and studied the city, and the author is dead-on accurate in describing streets, neighborhoods and buildings from so long ago.

Armed with this background, the author recreates the tensions and politics of Berlin. The story is set against the constant and often bloody warfare between Communists, Nazis and police.

Fears of a Communist putsch are pronounced; the Social Democratic Weimar government is condemned on all sides for ineptitude.

Police violence leads to a loss of control; 22 fatalities in one clash alone. The author also paints a Berlin with nightlife right out of "Cabaret" which adds further richness to the story's background.

Increasingly, the young Nazi party is making itself felt in street battles and other disruptive behavior--a foretaste of what is to come.

The story itself is well told, although the author tends to run two or three story lines at once and it can become, at times, confusing to keep all the characters straight.

But they are all integrated at the end. Inspector Rath is an interesting fellow to be sure. Transferring from Cologne, he finds Berlin a "cold, alien city.

So he has some major demons which he attacks through self-medication, especially booze. In short, while a fine detective, he is also like the real people we all know with their unique problems.

The translation is excellent, but don't expect unfamiliar historical individuals or events to be explained. There are no annotations to explain key elements of the historical background; but there is nothing here which impairs the story, while it does add to the reader's knowledge about this most interesting period in German history.

I believe there are six more volumes to come and I look forward to reading them and learning more about this perplexing Inspector and the Berlin of the 's and 's.

The early years of the Weimar Republic in Germany make for a rich background to any novel. There's corruption, the rise of the Nazis, the presence of a harsh and active, communist insurgency and a backdrop of decadence.

Police inspector Gereon Rath traipses through the decadence, the corruption and mixes it up with the Nazis as he tracks down murderers and deception in high places.

The novel as an intriguing atmosphere, the translation is very good, Gereon's own economical sense of the law and his infatuation with a secretary in the police force are all well told, but it doesn't have the breadth or the depth of the Netflix TV series where the decadence, corruption and limited choices of the characters produce a much more scary version of the pre-Hitler era.

It is well worth reading if only to show where the brilliance of the TV series came from. In its own right, the novel tells a tale of intrigue within a country that is rapidly losing its moral compass.

The TV series may take that further, but the picture painted by the novel is very good and the not-quite-ethical Gereon Rath is an ant-hero to follow.

Watched the online Netflix version while I was reading the book. They are different. The film version gives a better impression of Weimar Germany, while the book gives a little better plot.
